Mahdi Army

Great piece on the young generation (very violent and criminal) taking power in the Mahdi Army, by Sudasaran Raghavan in WaPo.

Many of fighters are 15, 17 years old.  They are products of the “Sanction Generation”, i.e. 90s.  A generation who has seen nothing but war (Gulf I and II) and Sanctions, oppression.

A new Shia milita will not rise to take power from them, until more and more of their mistakes (as described in the article) spread through word of mouth.  Until they over-reach, a la al-Qaeda in Iraq.  The battle right now is between the local thugs, young violent and stupid boys, and the leadership (including Sadr) who is attempting to bring discipline to the movement.
