Afghanistan News: NATO Edition

Not good.  The Alliance is suffering seriously from the Afghanistan operation.  Many of these strains were already in existence but have been brought to light, exacerbated by the failure of the mission (to date) in Afghanistan.  Story here

Andrew Bacevich thinks the Alliance is wrecked

Canada is thinking of a pullout, France is trying to buttress the situation by claiming they will step up (thereby keeping Canada in), Germany doesn’t want to go down to the South.  Messy.  Defense Secretary Gates has been putting pressure on Brussells to get more involved, but there is no operational mission clarity at this point.

Former Deputy PM of Canada Manley (brilliantly named The Manley Report) finished his report on Afghanistan which said essentially fish or cut bait.
