East Timor

Scary news out of there today:

DILI (Reuters) – East Timor President Jose Ramos-Horta was shot and critically wounded at his home in Dili on Monday in an assassination attempt by rebel soldiers that analysts said could spark renewed violence and political chaos in the tiny nation.

The Rebels are those who have been fighting the UN-backed Australian/New Zealand force supported country who gained independence from Indonesian military occupation in 2002.  Ramos Horta along with Catholic Bishop Carlos Belos shared the 1996 Nobel Peace Prize.

Fortunately so far there seems to be peace in the capital and Australia and NZ have pledged more troops and police.
