update wright letter

From Halperin at The Page, the NyTimes ran a piece on Wright/Obama, seeming to put Wright at odds with Obama over his (Obama’s) dis-invitation of Wright at the launch of his campaign.

Well Wright was shall I say less than fully pleased with the Times piece and wrote a letter to its author (Jodi Kantor).  The NyTimes pieceWright’s letter. The letter is blistering.

If Wright’s telling is accurate, he was wronged in the piece and is right to come back letting it be known how angry he was with the hatchet job.  The man is a fiery preacher, that comes through.

This piece of the letter is fascinating:

Out of a two-hour conversation with you about Barack’s spiritual journey and my protesting to you that I had not shaped him nor formed him, that I had not mentored him or made him the man he was, even though I would love to take that credit, you did not print any of that.

High praise and deep love.  Very pastoral.  Very humble too because he was a mentoring influence on Obama clearly.

And this gives a different sense of things:

Our Conference Minister, the Reverend Jane Fisler Hoffman, a white woman who belongs to a Black church that Hannity of
“Hannity and Colmes” is trying to trash, set the record straight for you in terms of who I am and in terms of who we are as the church to which Barack has belonged for over twenty years.

[A Conference is a regional grouping or body of the United Church of Christ–the Minister is entrusted with care for the whole of that body. I’d be interested to hear her take on this matter.]

Hannity has been despicable when it comes to the church and Obama’s faith.  As a fellow Christian its even more appalling.

Wright’s anger and hurt is that none of that, none of his nuanced views of the decency of the man made it into the hack job the Times did.
