Light Blogging–Paper Topics

Apologize for the lightness of blogging. It will likely be the same through next week. I have three papers due by a week from tomorrow.

For anyone interested I’m writing on Lord Acton Windeyer Sillitoe the first Anglican Bishop of New Westminster (the diocese to which I belong), who came to BC in the late 19th century. If you can’t tell by the name, dude was English. The main text is a series of memoirs from both the Bishop and his wife (Violet). The wife is a really fascinating woman. She has an amazing eye for detail in terms of the landscape.

The second paper is on the recent Church of England initiative on creating hybrid church governance structures and allowing some parishes to cross traditional diocesan boundaries. (A diocese is a geographic region headed by a bishop who has oversight for all the churches within those bounds. It’s originally a Roman military and juridical method of organization). You can read more about it here. While the Church of England is conservative on social-moral issues (they still haven’t ordained a woman bishop), they are very creative and forward looking in terms of evangelism, ministry, and outreach. Much more so than the “liberal” Canadian Anglican or American Episcopal Church.

Third, a paper on exorcism. So that may or may not be reflective of my current psychological state 🙂 I’m looking at more in line with the concept of deliverance from evil, words contained within the Our Father (“save us from temptation and deliver us from evil”). For an interesting take calling for a realistic but non-mythical view of the demonic and a role for the concept of deliverance in Christian theology, this article from Process Theologian David Ray Griffin is worth a read.

  1. I’m so excited about your exorcism paper… let me know if you need help with making any necessary talismans (or is it talismen?) or if you are in need of any of props (i.e. whips, chains, etc.)

  2. 10-4. As of yet no talismans needed. 🙂

Whips and chains might sound like I’m looking to get into something else wink, wink, nudge nudge know what I mean, know what I mean?

    peace.

    chris
